US. based Andrew Colbert is a visual artist living in Helsinki. His latest abstract works are focused on line, repetition, and systems that accumulate to patterns. Colbert’s abstract pieces’ roots are in ‘60s Op art and the Pattern and Decoration movement of the ’70s and ‘80s, focusing primarily on visual experience and formalism. The Moiré effect is a repeated motif in his recent abstract paintings.
Colbert has exhibited in Finland and the USA, for example, in New York and Miami.
“My wall paintings are an extension of my studio practice and in this case focus on layering a repetition of lines that result in an interference pattern or Moiré pattern. The first piece is hand drawn and the second the lines are taped which allows for more variation of color within a single layer. In the studio I am focused on color interaction as a way to play with the viewers understanding. Here, I was more concerned with making paintings that would work and be balanced at this scale with these materials.”
